At present, there are three main types of wines produced in Alsace, namely AlsAOC, Alsace Grand Cru AOC and Cremant d ‘Alsace.
Alsace AOC was officially established in 1962 and produces more than 70% of Alsace’s wine and 90% of the region’s white wines.
Most of these wines are made from a single variete and can be labelled with the name of the variete, while wines made from a blend of several varieties may be labelled “Edelzwier”.
Alsace wines are produced in 51 special estates defined according to geological and climatic criteria. These lands with unique terroir were officially granted AOC status in 2011, and only 5% of the total wine production in Alsace.
Except for Grand Cru Zotzenberg, which is allowed to grow silvaners, the rest of the gardens are allowed to grow only the four noble varieties.
Alsace sparkling wines, which received official AOC status in 1976, are made by the Traditional Method, secondary fermentation in bottles and at least nine months of pure-aging, and are made in a variety of styles.
Alsace also produces a spirit called Marc d ‘Alsace, which is made from the pulp left over from the region’s gewurztraminer grapes and produces a clear, aromatic wine.
